In exploring the Social Web I’m always looking for local expressions of how people create, communicate, collaborate and compete across the net. And it struck me, as I was scanning the local paper, the Press and Journal, how I’m still relying on the traditional print media, owned now by uber traditional company, family-owned D.C Thomson, for news of this sort.
A newspaper is compiled by a staff of reporters, whose job it is to put together reports of things that happen in their local area. They will look for stories and they will be sent stories – by businesses, organisations and the general public. Consequently, they are the focus for a vast amount of local knowledge, past, present and future.
Now I read a range of blogs everyday, but the ones I follow all tend to commentate on developments in the global world of media and the Social Web. Until I find someone or something which aggregates all the relevant issues for me on a local level, I’ll be buying and reading that local paper everyday.
